tube feeding Explanation: P -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 mins (2016-05-01 15:31:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- A feeding tube is a medical device used to provide nutrition to patients who cannot obtain nutrition by mouth, are unable to swallow safely, or need nutritional supplementation. The state of being fed by a feeding tube is called gavage, enteral feeding or tube feeding. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 mins (2016-05-01 15:34:20 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- WHY IS A FEEDING TUBE USED? Feeding from the breast or bottle requires strength and coordination. Sick or premature babies may not be able to suck or swallow well enough to bottle or breastfeed. Tube (gavage) feedings allow the baby to get some or all of their feeding into the stomach. This is the most efficient and safest way to provide good nutrition. Oral medicines can also be given through the tube. |
