Source text - English The lineal and circular metaphors for time used by Western or non-indigenous peoples lead me to a consideration of the linear and circular objects that Tukanoans use to give form to abstract notions of time and space, and of why a discussion of chanting, memory and writing should also include a consideration of numbers and counting. Here I can only offer some very brief observations that are designed to add further dimensions to the material discussed earlier. Let me begin with the Andean quipus that were one of Severi's (2009) examples. We have already seen that rapids on rivers, effectively points on a line, are used as mnemonic devices or quipus in the URN but we also find real quipus in Amazonia. Made of knotted strings and sometimes incorporating figurines, feathers, bones, and other objects, these Amazonian quipus serve to represent sequences of time, points on journeys or various sequential operations, or to indicate ordered series of chants or songs, ritual sequences or a succession of past events. The Yagua use such knotted strings for memorizing ritual sequences, songs and chants, the latter detailing clan histories, genealogies, and war stories (Chaumeil 2005).
I have never myself seen such knotted string quipus in use amongst Tukanoan peoples but I have been told of specialist dancers (baya) teaching others to memorize sequence of dance songs by using strings of beads of alternating colours. In NW Amazonian myths about the origins of night, and thus of time itself, there are also several references to people untying knots in strings of beads to set time in motion, to counting off sequences of beads in order to remember sequences of song that measure time and to putting on and taking off body ornaments as a mnemonic for temporal sequences. These Amazonian quipus of knotted string or coloured beads should therefore take their place alongside the rapids, petroglyphs, houses and baskets discussed above. As Chaumeil (2007: 272 and passim) observes, such apparatuses imply a particular idea of chronology, one of cumulative time and of links between the living and their ancestors. As might be expected, the use of these Amazonian quipus is frequently (though not exclusively) associated with a particular form of society in which genealogical awareness and some form of "unilinear" reckoning is present - as in the URN.

Já vimos que as corredeiras dos rios, de fato, apontam para uma linha, e são usadas como dispositivos mnemônicos ou quipus no ARN, mas também descobrimos verdadeiros quipus na Amazônia. Feitos de cordões com nós e, algumas vezes, incorporando figurinos, penas, ossos e outros objetos, esses quipus da Amazônia servem para representar sequências do tempo, representar as jornadas ou diversas operações sequenciais, ou ainda para indicar séries ordenadas de cantos e músicas, sequências rituais ou uma sucessão de eventos passados. Os Yagua usam esses cordões com nós para memorizar sequências rituais, músicas e cantos, esses últimos para detalhar genealogias e histórias de clãs e de guerras (Chaumeil, 2005).
Eu mesmo nunca vi esses quipus de cordões com nós em uso entre os povos Tukano, mas já me falaram de dançarinos especialistas (baya) ensinando outros a memorizar sequências de canções de danças usando os cordões de contas com cores alternadas. Nos mitos do noroeste da Amazônia sobre as origens da noite e, portanto, do próprio tempo, existem diversas referências a pessoas que desfazem os nós nos cordões de contas para colocar o tempo em movimento, à contagem de sequências de contas a fim de lembrar de sequências de músicas que medem o tempo e a colocar e retirar ornamentos corporais como parte de um sistema mnemônico para sequências temporais . Esses quipus amazônicos de cordões com nós ou contas coloridas deveriam portanto ter um lugar junto com as corredeiras, os petróglifos, as casas e as cestarias discutidas acima. Conforme observa Chaumeil (2007: 272 e seguintes), tais aparatos implicam uma ideia particular de cronologia, de tempo cumulativo e de ligações entre os vivos e seus ancestrais. Como pode-se esperar, o uso desses quipus amazônicos é frequentemente (embora não exclusivamente) associado a uma forma específica de sociedade na qual a consciência genealógica e alguma forma de reconhecimento “não linear” está presente – como no ARN.

Chapter 3: Idea, Premise, and Concept
We’re going to be spending the bulk of this book looking at what I call “the four corner pillars” of novel construction. While there is no set order to any of these pillars, I’ve already mentioned that these primary four need to be solid before you focus on the other eight. Your roof [read: novel] will collapse if any of these corner supports fail, so instead of working on your novel using a shotgun approach or trying to tackle the components in a random fashion, do what builders do—frame up the building with the required supporting beams before even thinking about putting on the roof or laying down flooring.
In the last chapters of the book, I’ll be showing you ways you can holistically brainstorm these four pillars together, growing your ideas and developing them so that the pillars are tightly connected. This is a different way to approach novel writing, but one I think you will soon learn is the most effective and intuitive.
I listed the four main supports in the last chapter: Concept with a Kicker, Conflict with High Stakes, Protagonist with a Goal, and Theme with a Heart. Even though you haven’t yet learned the nuances and attributes for the other three pillars, throughout these initial chapters, as we go deep into these four primary novel supports, I will continually draw your attention to them, for these corner pillars need to be solidly constructed—which can only be done if you work on all four together.
Think how a building would need those four pillars already built and equal in size, shape, width, and weight when they are put into place. That’s what you’ll need to do before you can construct the remaining eight pillars.
So let’s take an initial look at the first pillar—Concept with a Kicker, which is often the most difficult one to get a handle on, and is the weakest pillar in most novels.

Mesmo que você ainda não tenha aprendido as nuances e atributos dos três outros Pilares, ao longo desses capítulos iniciais, à medida em que nos aprofundamos nos quatro primeiros apoios do romance, chamarei continuamente sua atenção para eles, pois esses Pilares essenciais precisam ser construídos solidamente – o que só se pode fazer se forem trabalhados os quatro conjuntamente.
Pense como uma construção precisaria desses quatro Pilares já prontos e com tamanho, formato, largura e peso iguais para serem colocados no lugar. É o que você precisará fazer antes de construir os oito Pilares restantes.
Então, vamos dar uma olhada inicial no primeiro Pilar – Conceito com uma Sacada, que, em geral, é o mais difícil de manusear, e é o Pilar mais fraco na maioria dos romances.

I graduated in Translation in 1991 and obtained a master degree in Translation Studies both at the University of Brasilia (UnB). I conlcuded my Doctorate on Applied Linguistics also at UnB. I work as a translator for 25 years, since I graduated, and I have experience with terminology since I organized about 10 glossaries at the Brazilian Ministry of Health as well as studied terminology in my master and doctorate. I use the Sketch Engine program both to work with corpus linguistics and do Terminology work.
During college time I was involved in a Speleology group and used to explore caves. In my free time I like to read, watch a movie, walk on the park, do some windsurfing and stand up paddle, as well as ride my motorcycle.
