It's YOUR working tool. They know that perfectly well, but it’s up to you to remind them of that fact.

Besides, if some other client wants you to implement 'security measures' that are incompatible with these ones, what will you be supposed to do then?

They are certainly free to send you a laptop with all the 'security settings' they want for you to use exclusively for working for them. That's the 'usual deal' for employees working from home.

But I somehow doubt they would do that, as it would defeat the purpose of the whole exercise: treat you as an employee when making all sort of requirements but for sure NOT when it comes to paying.

A possible compromise: create either a Virtual Machine only for them or a separate encrypted folder for all files related this client – THAT would be a perfectly reasonable requirement.

Create a full image backup of C: with Macrium Reflect
2. Create a Macrium Reflect rescue USB
3. Test that I can actually boot from that rescue USB and access the backup
4. Only after that proceed with Microsoft 2FA and BitLocker

Does this sound like the correct order?

Specific questions:

* Where exactly do I enable Microsoft 2FA in a Microsoft account nowadays?
* Anything important I am overlooking before proceeding?
* Any pitfalls when enabling BitLocker on multiple drives, including an external backup HDD?

This is my freelance translation work laptop, so I want to avoid locking myself out of Windows, my files, or my Microsoft account.

It’s developed by David Carpenter. You can download it from here: [url removed]

I have no partnership with them but if you like the tool, they have a donate page on their website. I can confidently say that, as I had huge problems with that with the predecessor computer. So I know what overheating means.

@Robert

Yes, I too understand that Win 10 will be supported for another year. I just wanted to know about the update, as I´m constantly being reminded by the computer that I should go for it.

Old Win PC tend to have data/file clutters, orphan registries, temp files etc. that build up over time and slowing down the PC.

I think it's a good idea to upgrade to Win 11, since Microsoft announced that they will end Win 10 support this year. That means no more updates to your Win 10 system.

Other alternatives for a lighter PC is by using OS like Linux. There are some beginner-friendly Linux distros like Ubuntu, Mint, etc. that will give user experience close to (but not entirely the same as) Win. Many resources on the internet mention distros that work well on 15 years or older systems.

Or, if you work mainly using internet, you could consider using a Chromebook. It's a laptop installed with an OS from Google, namely ChromeOS; a custom-tailored Linux distro made by Google. New Chromebooks are supposedly cheaper than Windows laptops. But the caveat is you should always connected to the internet as the system relies on Google services.

Hope this helps!

[Diedit pada 2025-10-05 13:40 GMT]

[Diedit pada 2025-10-05 13:41 GMT]

Windows 11 works perfectly on one of my laptops that is over 10 years old. The initial compatibility restrictions (which could have been circumvented, but that's another matter) seem to have been relaxed with the end of Windows 10 support, but clearly raise some questions about user comfort and security. It's still a good idea to start by using the compatibility checker to uncover any underlying issues.

Have a lokk here: [url removed]

There is a lot of literature on the web about this. (or rather the Windows-related programmes)?

Since I´m not knowledgable enough and certainly not a computer guru, I would not dare wiping disks or anything and reinstalling anew or take my computer apart etc.

But from experience with previous examplares, I can tell that this one is most certainly not overheating. And there also is no excessive "junk" on it, as I´m regularly conducting custom cleans etc. and deleting all files and stuff that is no longer needed.

Forum: Windows operating systems
Topic: Upgrading to Windows 11 on an older Laptop
Poster: Anton Konashenok
Post title: Windows version has nothing to do with it

No one is slowing your system down deliberately, it's an urban legend.
On the software side, you may simply have a lot of garbage, malware or bad settings accumulated in the system. The ultimate remedy to that is to back up your data, wipe your disk, reinstall Windows from scratch, then restore your data.
On the hardware side, the thermal paste under your CPU may have dried up or leaked out. If so, the system would slow down because of overheating, and you can easily check it by installing temperature monitoring software. If it shows persistently high temperatures even when the computer is not under high load, you'll need to disassemble the computer, take off the heatsink, clean off the old paste, put good new paste or conductive pads, and reassemble everything.
Upgrading to Windows 11 would not make your system any faster compared to Windows 10. Personally, I decided to stay on Windows 10 because I don't need any of the new functions in Windows 11.

Forum: Windows operating systems
Topic: Upgrading to Windows 11 on an older Laptop
Poster: Manuela Junghans

Does anyone have any experiende or knowledge about upgrading to Windows 11 on an older Laptop?

I´m not entirely sure, but I´d reckon that my laptop would be about 7 years old (one year give or take).

For some time now I´m being "pestered" with this Windows 11 upgrade, but I´m reluctant to go ahead with it, not knowing if after the upgrade nothing will work anymore.

But in the meantime I think they deliberately slow down all Windows functions to a point that files take ages to open and/or completely freeze up.

I assume that would be kind of a way to "force" you to upgrade.

Any thoughts on this welcome.

Thanks and happy Sunday!

Manuela

[Edited at 2025-10-05 07:48 GMT]

Thanks again and best regards,
Matthias

Note added:
Works oddly enough only for a few functions (for example ctrl + E in Deja Vu), but I will find out later, why not with the numeral keys etc. Main problem solved and you showed my a way how to solve it.

[Bearbeitet am 2025-08-01 13:29 GMT]

My Google researches were of no quick help without experimenting for too long time, that's why I would like to know how you handle this problem (the Copilot key has replaced the second ctrl key on the right side of the keyboard). Thanks in advance!

Forum: Windows operating systems
Topic: Windows updates can’t find and apply updates: possible fix
Poster: Philippe Locquet

Hi, I haven’t seen a proper post about this on the internet so, I’m posting it here in case it helps someone.

In some situations, Windows Update will stop working. Although normally very annoying Windows Update brings drivers updates and security patches which are best practice to have especially on computers used for work.
I have seen that all the RegEdit tweaks and other command line actions failed on a machine. Here is what solved it: the Windows Update Blocker V1.8 from Sordum. That feels weird, sure. Bear with me.
The fix works this way: once installed, you trigger a full Windows Update block by clicking both on “Disable Updates and Protect Services Settings” and
After that, open the app again and click on “Enable Updates”. And click “Apply now”. Now this process will put everything back in its normal state so that the computer will get Windows Update back on again.
It worked on a machine where nothing else would.

CAUTION:
1/Be extremely careful what you click on within the Sordum website, the “real” download button is towards the bottom of the page.
2/You’re doing this at your own risk, just posting what worked in my experience on a machine that did not respond to standard recommended fixes.
Page: [url removed]
