hab hier einen sehr kritischen Text über das amerikanische Bildungssystem und die Problematik der Chancengleichheit.

Das Problem hier: "Johnny is now so dumb that he can’t pour piss out of a boot with the instructions on the bottom—assuming he can even read the instructions".

Schwierigkeiten bereitet mir vor allem "on the bottom". Ich kenne diesen Ausdruck eher mit "on the heel", also "he can’t pour piss out of a boot with the instructions on the heel". Und ich bin am Überlegen, ob dadurch, dass der Autor "bottom" statt "heel" benutzt, sich die Bedeutung verschiebt.

Falls sie sich nicht verschiebt, würde ich übersetzen: "Jonhny ist so dumm, dass er kein A vom B unterscheiden kann, vorausgesetzt, dass er überhaupt lesen kann".
Haltet Ihr diese Lösung für angemessen?

The 64,000 dollar question Is whether we want to translate the statement and preserve the raw impact of the original for the sake of authenticity - or are we looking for a toned-down, politically correct interpretation of it that may or may not offend the special sensitivities (my ass!) of German readers with extremely vivid language and bare facts?

I see no real, or even logical, need for "Entschärfung".

If it is a quote from a real person, I would always translate it as far as possible with the, anger, emotion and tonality with which the statement was made.

Whoever said it/wrote it was absolutely livid about the system and let off a full head of steam

He or she did not say anything like "The poor little kiddies seem to leave school knowing even less than when they started" - the statement has to be written and translated with the raw anger and frustration that the original brings across. In the sense of

"Als die rein gingen waren's Halbidioten, jetzt kommen sie als Vollidioten wieder 'raus"

The fact that "now" - after schooling! - is stressed here is a clear criticism of the educational system, and that the kids are dumber after schooling than they were before it.

Mir begegnet die US-amerikanische ... Formulierung hier erstmals und ich habe mich auch nicht schlau gemacht, ob es dafür bereits eine "offizielle" Übersetzung gibt - aber etwas milder als im Original könnte man vielleicht formulieren: Johnny is so doof, dass er für die einfachsten Sachen eine Gebrauchsanweisung benötigt - immer vorausgesetzt, er kann überhaupt lesen.

Ganz gleich, was im AT steht oder gemeint ist, der obige Satz ergibt mit dem "vorausgesetzt" keinerlei Sinn. Wer lesen kann, der kann natürlich auf jeden Fall die Buchstaben A und B unterscheiden. Umgekehrt kann mancher sehr wohl ein A von einem B unterscheiden aber trotzdem keinen Text lesen.

Der einzig mögliche Sinn ist dieser : "..., dass er nicht mal ein A von einem B unterscheiden kann, geschweige denn [einen Text] lesen".
