English to German: Paragraph from a novell General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English In German, all the Nouns begin with a capital letter. Now that is a good idea; and a good idea, in this language, is necessarily conspicuous from its lonesomeness. I consider this capitalizing of nouns a good idea, because by reason of it you are almost always able to tell a noun the minute you see it. You fall into error occasionally, because you mistake the name of a person for the name of a thing, and waste a good deal of time trying to dig a meaning out of it. German names almost always do mean something, and this helps to deceive the student. I translated a passage one day, which said that "the infuriated tigress broke loose and utterly ate up the unfortunate fir forest" (Tannenwald). When I was girding up my loins to doubt this, I found out that Tannenwald in this instance was a man's name.
Translation - German Im Deutschen fangen alle Substantive mit einem Großbuchstaben an. Nun, das ist eine gute Idee; und in dieser Sprache fällt eine gute Idee zwangsläufig wegen ihrer Seltenheit auf.
Ich halte die Großschreibung der Substantive für eine gute Idee, weil man daran fast immer ein solches auf den ersten Blick erkennen kann. Gelegentlich wird man doch in die Irre geführt, weil man fälschlicherweise den Namen einer Person für den Namen einer Sache hält und dadurch ziemlich viel Zeit damit vergeudet, zu versuchen, den Sinn zu verstehen. Deutsche Namen haben fast immer eine Bedeutung, was dazu beiträgt, den Schüler zu täuschen. Einmal habe ich ein Stück übersetzt, das besagte, dass sich „die wütende Tigerin losriß und den unglückseligen Tannenwald vollständig auffraß”. Als ich mich mental darauf vorbereitete dieses zu bezweifeln, entdeckte ich, dass „Tannenwald” in diesem Falle der Name eines Mannes war.

Source text - English The history of the invention of the first ceramic insulators dates as far back as 1850, when post-type insulators were first used on telecommunication lines. Since that time their design and production developed and until today they are widely used at all voltage levels, but not without problems, which occur when pollution and moisture form a highly conductive layer on the surface of the insulators. In that situation the surface resistance decreases with up to 10000 times compared to that of a a dry and clean surface. Since such a layer acts like an ohmic resistance, it will dry out inhomogeneously and the voltage distribution along the insulator, which is already far from uniform, becomes even worse. Surface discharges occur, bridging dry bands formed by the ohmic losses in the surface layer. This dry band arcing can develop into a complete flashover of the insulator. A failure of insulators due to flashovers causes interruptions in power supply.
Translation - Swedish Keramiska isolatorer uppfanns redan på 1850-talet och användes då som stödisolatorer på teleledningar. Deras design och tillverkning har utvecklats sedan dess och även idag används de i stor utsträckning på alla spänningsnivåer, men inte utan problem, som uppstår när luftföroreningar och luftfuktighet bildar ett elektriskt ledande skikt på isolatorns yta. Detta kan leda till att ytans elektriska motstånd minskar med upp till 10000 gånger jämfört med en torr och ren yta. Eftersom sådana skikt fungerar som ett Ohmsk motstånd, torkar ytan ojämnt och spänningsfördelningen över isolatorn blir ännu mer icke-linjär. Små urladdningar kan utvecklas och kortsluta torra områden på ytan, som formats på grund av värmeutveckling i ytsiktet. Source text - German Für die Untersuchung an Längsgrenzflächen zwischen Isolierfeststoffen standen zwei Typen von Grenzflächen zur Verfügung, die sich hinsichtlich ihrer Herstellung unterschieden.
Die im folgenden als „trennbar“ bezeichneten Grenzflächen wurden durch das Aufeinanderlegen zweier Isoliertstoffplatten gebildet bzw. entstanden durch das Aufschieben eines Schirmes aus Silikonelastomer auf einen zylinderförmigen Stab. Beide Varianten ermöglichten es, unterschiedliche Parameter der Längsgrenzfläche, wie Isolierstoffkombination, Oberflächenrauhigkeit, Anpreßdruck und Feuchtigkeitsgehalt zu beeinflussen.
„Nicht-trennbare“ Grenzflächen waren in dieser Untersuchung Längsgrenzfächen, die durch da Angießen eines Isolierstoffes an einen weiteren entstanden, wobei die Elektroden mit angegossen wurden. Einflußfaktoren auf die Eigenschaften der Grenzflächen waren in diesem Fall die Stoffkombination und der Einsatz von Haftvermittlern.
Translation - Swedish För att undersöka längsgående gränsytor mellan isolationsmaterial tillverkades två olika typer av gränsytor. Det som i fortsättningen kallas för „delbara“ gränsytor är längsgående ytor som bildas genom att antingen lägga ihop två plattor av isolationsmaterial eller genom att sätta ihop en silikonskärm och en cylinder. Båda varianterna gör det möjligt att undersöka olika parameter såsom materialkombination, ytsträvhet, yttryck och fukthalt.
I denna studie betyder „icke-delbara“ gränsytor att själva gränsytan tillverkades genom att gjuta ihop två isolationsmaterial samt elektroder med varandra.
Faktorer som påverkar gränsytans egenskaper var i detta fall materialkombinationen och användningen av vidhäftningsförbättrande medel.
