Il colle del Montello è una struttura brachianticlinalica in via di sollevamento, situata al fronte della catena di età neogenica-attuale delle Alpi venete. È formato da rocce di età da messiniana (Conglomerato del Montello), che fanno parte della Molassa delle Alpi meridionali orientali, deposte in un ambiente di transizione da marino a continentale. La parte medio alta (continentale) della successione è un’alternanza più o meno regolare di depositi grossolani di cono alluvionale (conglomerati e arenarie a cemento calcitico) e depositi fini di ambiente lacustre (argille e siltiti). La composizione dei clasti dei livelli conglomeratici è prevalentemente carbonatica (calcari e dolomie mesozoici), ma sono presenti anche ciottoli di rocce magmatiche e metamorfiche più antiche, che testimoniano il livello d’erosione delle aree di provenienza, situate più a nord nella catena in via di sollevamento. Sono stati riconosciuti una sessantina di cicli a piccola scala, interpretati come il prodotto di fluttuazioni climatiche, mentre grande scala sono state riconosciute quattro megasequenze, separate da disconformità con o senza discordanza angolare, che testimoniano un’attività tettonica sindeposizionale. A NO del Montello (Cornuda) la parte alta del conglomerato messiniano presenta in affioramento una discordanza di natura erosiva ricoperta da sedimenti fini di età pliocenica inferiore. Recentemente, questa discordanza è stata collegata con quella riconosciuta nel sottosuolo tramite sezioni sismiche, proponendo che parte del versante meridionale del Montello sia costituito da conglomerati pleistocenici poggianti su tale discordanza. A questa conclusione si può arrivare anche ipotizzando che questa discordanza sia più recente rispetto a quella di Cornuda, cioè conseguente a una fase di deformazione tettonica medio-pliocenica.
La struttura profonda dell’anticlinale del Montello è stata recentemente messa in evidenza tramite sezioni sismiche. La piega è il riflesso superficiale di una deformazione tuttora attiva prodotta dal movimento di una faglia inversa (oppure della rampa di un sovrascorrimento) immergente a NNO, che rappresenta la faglia più esterna della catena sudalpina orientale. Ad essa si associano faglie antitetiche coniugate, cioé con immersione a SSE. In sezione N-S il colle del Montello appare quindi delimitato da faglie inverse coniugate convergenti verso il basso secondo una tipica struttura di pop-up, o cuneo espulso verso l’alto.
La storia della crescita dell’anticlinale è stata ricostruita mediante l’esame del gruppo di terrazzi fluviali sollevati a diverse quote, particolarmente evidenti nel settore occidentale, che sono il prodotto del progressivo spostamento verso ovest del corso del Piave, prima della sua brusca deviazione verso est-nordest.

The Montello hill is a relatively recent anticlinal structure which is slowly rising, situated along the edge of the recently-formed “Alpi Venete” mountain chain. It comprises rock from the messinia era (Montello Conglomerate), which makes up the sedimentary rock of the southeastern Alps, deposited in a transitional area between marine and continental. The medium-high (continental) part of the range is a more or less regular alternation of coarse deposits of alluvial cone (conglomerate and sandstone with a calcite cement) and fine lacustrian deposits (sandstone and siltstone). The composition of the rock fragments of the conglomerate levels is mostly carbonates (limestone and Mesozoic Dolomite), but pebbles of magma rock and older metamorphic rock are also present, and stand testament to the level of erosion of the source area, situated further north in the rising Alpine chain. Some sixty small-scale eras have been identified, interpreted as a product of climatic fluctuation, while four mega-sequence large-scale fluctuations have been identified, separated by disconformities with or without angular discordance, which is evidence of a stationary tectonic deposit. To the north west of the Montello (Cornuda) the high part of the messinian conglomerate presents a discordant outcrop of an erosional nature covered by sediment from the lower pliocenic era. More recently, this discordance has been connected to that identified in the substrate using seismic sectioning, suggesting that part of the southern slope of the Montello is made up of pleistocenic conglomerates resting on that discordance. One can also arrive at this conclusion hypothesising that this discordance is more recent than the one in Cornuda, that is to say, a consequence of a phase of tectonic deformation medio-pliocenic. The deep structure of the anticlinal of the Montello has recently been highlighted by using seismic sectioning. The fold is the surface reflection of a still-active deformation still in progress produced by an inverse fault (or by an over sliding ramp) emerging at the NNO, which represents the most external fault of the south eastern Alps. To this are associated linked opposite faults, that is to say, with a SSE immersion. In a N-S section the Montello hill therefore appears delimited by inverse linked opposite faults converging downwards based on a typical pop-up structure, or a wedge expelled upwards.
The history of the anticlinal growth has been reconstructed by an examination of the group of fluvial terraces raised to different heights, particularly evident in the western section, which are the product of a progressive shift westwards of the Piave river, before its abrupt change of direction to the east-northeast.
