I do work in-house, although I am looking into going freelance now (don't even know where to start btw XD). I think the best part is not having to worry about finding clients, setting up projects or solving technical issues. We have sales people, project managers, IT guys and accountants that take care of all the stuff a freelancer has to do on top of translating. Besides that, team work is really great. I think the main issue with working in-house is the low pay.

An enriching experience Sep 8, 2016

What I've enjoyed most during the years I've worked as an in-house translator at a prestigious law firm was the top quality of the documents I had to translate and the variety of topics that passed through my hands. The workload was heavy because we only outsourced those texts that were not strictly confidential; all the others (civil court appeals, Supreme Court appeals, sale and purchase agreements, escrow agreements, mergers & acquisitions, criminal defense documents, due diligence reports, filings with the Administration, etc.) were done by us in-house. The advantage: I worked with texts that belonged to all branches of the Law; the disadvantage: I wasn't my own boss. However, it has been a highly enriching experience because I've learnt a lot; it marked a before and an after in my career!Collapse

I worked in-house for 23 years. Most of all, I like the pension I earned and now currently enjoy. I also liked the job security, regular salary, having colleagues and other professionals around, and the travel: back in the day we traveled all over the place; my job took me to over 20 countries.

I worked in-house since my 16 years old and I have 47: 31 years of hard work and more 36 until a pension.
If I have a pension after working 24 years in-house...i'll travel without destiny all-over the world.

Only worked in-house for 4 months Sep 8, 2016

But the best thing about working in-house was the steady biweekly salary. I guess it was a relief knowing there was money coming in but now I make more as a freelancer than working in-house.

pension vs. PENSION Sep 9, 2016

Are pensions that good in Portugal? Because, in Brazil, I will be entitled to a pension, yes, but it won't be enough to pay for my groceries! I'll have to work till the day I die, even with a government pension and a private plan I also have.
