The changes in the real world affected the self-definition of the scholars.
The disciplines that formerly specialized in the non-Western world found
themselves looked upon with political suspicion in the countries they had
traditionally studied. As a result, the term "Orientalism" gradually disappeared, its former practitioners often becoming historians. Anthropology
was forced to redefine its focus rather radically, since both the concept of the
"primitive" and the reality it was supposed to reflect were disappearing. In
some ways, anthropologists "came home," beginning to study as well the
countries from which the majority of them originated. As for the four other
disciplines, they now for the first time had faculty members specializing in
parts of the world with which their curricula had not previously been concerned. The whole distinction between modern and non-modern zones was

Ezek a társadalmi változások a tudósok önmagukról alkotott képét is megváltoztatták. Azoknak a diszciplínáknak a képviselői, amelyek korábban a Nyugaton kívüli világ tanulmányozására specializálódtak, hirtelen gyanakvó politikai légkörrel találták szembe magukat azokban az országokban,
amelyeket hagyományosan vizsgáltak. Ennek eredményeképpen az „orientalizmus” kifejezés fokozatosan kikopott a használatból, a diszciplína képviselőiből pedig általában történészek lettek. Ami az antropológiát illeti, itt is a tudomány hangsúlyainak meglehetősen radikális újrafogalmazására volt szükség, mivel a „primitív” társadalmaknak mind a fogalma, mind a fogalom által elvileg tükrözött valóság eltűnőben volt. Bizonyos értelemben az antropológusok „hazatértek”: elkezdték saját országukat is tanulmányozni.

This, perhaps, is the lesson to be learned from the traumas of the
twentieth century: to keep Knowledge and the function of the Master
as far apart as possible. Even the liberal notion of electing the people
most "qualified" to lead is not sufficient here. One should pursue this
to the end and endorse the basic insight of ancient democracy: that
choice by lot is the only truly democratic choice. This is why Kojin
Karatani's proposal of combining elections with lotteries in determining who will rule is more traditional than it may at first appear
(he himself mentions Ancient Greece)-paradoxically, it fulfils the

Talán ez a 20. század traumáinak (egyik) tanulsága: tartsuk a Tudás
és a Mester alakját olyan távol egymástól, amennyire csak lehet. Még a
liberális elképzelés a leginkább „alkalmas” ember megválasztásáról sem
elég itt. Ehelyett, gondolatmenetünket folytatva tovább kell mennünk a
jelzett úton, elfogadva az ókori demokrácia alapvető belátását: a sorshúzás az egyetlen valóban demokratikus választási mechanizmus. Kojin
