Bio
I am a native Korean living in Italy for more than 20 years and is currently working as a translator of ecclesiastical documents for various religious organizations.
My formal training and professional activities as a translator started during my studies at the Pontificial Biblical Institute in Rome. I worked with Greek and Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible which entailed searching for etymology, meaning and various linguistic nuances of other cultures. This has impressed upon me that “careful reading” means translating every word and then paraphrasing.
Additionally, as a teacher of “Religious culture” in Italian Public Kindergarden Schools for several years, provided me a rare opportunity in the formation of civil citizenship using basic knowledge of the Italian culture, tradition and its Catholic influence. My experience teaching children from ages three to five was challenging in many ways. It entailed keeping them focused while gaining their attention by adapting complex concepts through storytelling using traditional costumes, religious and moral values.
Translating into different languages such as Italian, English, or Korean, requires a "careful reading”, as is well known, and is similar to the paraphrasing done by
modern readers of old Biblical manuscripts. Further it is also likened to children trying to catch the real meaning and subtlety of an unfamiliar language.
I'm based in Bologna and Rome, Italy. I also vist Korea every year.
