I'm trying to display other photos in the About Me but for some reason it does not work. Is it limited in the kind of files that can be shown in this area?

I tried, just now, with jpg and png. Both showed up. Maybe you should check your html img tag.

Thanks to both of you. I tried with different file types and files of various sizes. It doesn't seem to matter what I do - the images just don't display on my About Me.

It could be a problem with the site. The tiny profile pic thumbnail to the left of my name at the very top of the screen hasn't showed for me in about a year. I just see the empty box where it should go.
I guess you should probably lodge a support ticket at this point, if you haven't already. Someone can take a look at it for you.
