I call my dog Loki, spelt with a K, but it's short for "loquita"... because she's bonkers.

I live in Portugal and I have an old French bulldog (almost 13 years) bought in Spain (aren’t we international?). Her name comes from a Portuguese outstanding beach destination with crystal clear waters and pine forested sand dunes. I can’t say her name here because it happens to be a very pejorative name in Italian (derogatory term for “prostitute”). Sorry!

Here is a picture of her 12 years ago, when she was just 6 months old…

Troia

I call my cat Misha because anglophones think it's something exotic. In reality, "micia" pronounced with a Florentine accent, simply means "pussy cat". Which is what she is.

Our cat's name is Lucy, which is actually English but works well in German too. Of course, like all real cats, she won't listen to her name except if combined with the smell of food.

Where is the option "I don't have a pet"?

We once had a budgie called Jimmy and a tortoise called Kojak.

No more pets wanted, too much trouble if we want to go on holiday.

I have always given my pets names in English. My cats were Marmalade, Semantha, and Pippi Longstocking. My Dogs were Bingo, McTavish, Bruce, Fiona, Toby, and Snow. When my Brazilian husband and I shared a dog, she was registered as "Sunshine, Anjo de Rabo" - 'angel with a tail'. I briefly had an Alaskan Malamute who was already registered with an Alaskan name: Kee-wa-lik. When I was very young I had a Chow Chow that I named "Shang" because I thought it sounded Chinese. Name of a.city Aug 2, 2021

My cat was born approx. one week before Halloween, so I named her Salem, which is the same in French and in English, except that the letter "a" is pronounced differently.

Three names Aug 2, 2021

I suppose my senior cat's name, Gina, is Italian, which is not one of my languages. Coco could be any of many languages but definitely pronounced the Spanish way and my big ginger tom Lolo is undoubtedly Spanish in all respects.

Naruto became Narutão... Aug 2, 2021

My 11-year-old poodle is called Naruto after the Japanese manga and anime, and I made it Portuguese with "Narutão" (affectionately "big Naruto").

No Pets Aug 2, 2021

Although I had pets in the past (dogs, cats, and horses) and worked for a brief time as Acting Educational Director for the oldest humane society (Atlanta, Georgia) in the United States, I don't have anything to do with animals anymore. I don't have the time or the ability to take care of dogs and horses the way that they need to be. Although cats are so much more independent, I would find their cute behaviors too distracting to concentrate on my work!
