I tend to work slower and stress-free, but I must say that sometimes I have less work because I am working on a longish assignment and I have been refusing work from new customers. I work regularly with small jobs (less than 1,000 words) from some of my long-standing customers and occasionally with very big jobs from other clients (over 50,000 words). Once in a while everything happens at the same time: as a freelance translator it’s not easy to have a control over the workflow. Now and then sticking to various deadlines requires extreme juggling. Right now after a hectic first fortnight it’s time to wind down (unfortunately, the news reports don't make it easy). ▲ Collapse | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 01:58 Spanish to English + ...
It's not something I usually spend time checking up on, but it is possible, because the more flexible the deadlines are, the more I enjoy my work.
I may feel slightly more relaxed and perhaps listen to more music at the beginning, but the amount of research, checks, proofreading, etc. is the same.

either. If it is slow today, it might be busier tomorrow and if you deliberately go slower, you may have to rush with the next task. If it is quiet, there are always other things that have to be done | | | Samuel Murray Netherlands Local time: 01:58 Member (2006) English to Afrikaans + ...
I don't work slower if I have less work, but I do work faster if I have more work.

Because I want to get assignments over and done with, so I can spend time that much sooner with relatives and doing things like going to the gym and the parks around here (important, after sitting in one spot while working for long periods of time, and for one's cognitive health, too). And also because I want to be that much more ready and available to take on a new assignment when one is offered to me.

But, alas, yes, I CAN get lazy when it's slow ... which is not often, fortunately. | | | Michael Newton United States Local time: 19:58 Japanese to English + ... Spend more time | Mar 24, 2022 |
Every assignment should get the time, effort and concentration it deserves regardless of the workload. | | | Other - a combination of the above | Mar 25, 2022 |
Since I'm a perfectionist (status made official in the previous poll), I find that I often obsess more when I have more time. There's always room to improve a translation. On the other hand, sometimes I deliver a job ahead of schedule. I almost did that this week on a long job that I've finished but haven't proofread. Instead, I chose to take care of some other pressing business. I will proofread it over the weekend and deliver it on schedule next Monday. | | | expressisverbis Portugal Local time: 00:58 Member (2015) English to Portuguese + ...
I don't spend more time in an assignment when I have less work. I meet deadlines, and I spend the time that is required for each project I am assigned. It's a bit difficult to understand this question, because I don't know what is the purpose for slowing down my projects, whether or not I have more or less work. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Do you spend more time in an assignment when you have less work?
