But I would only work on material that interested me (fortunately, I am constantly fascinated by the subject matter that crosses my desk) and for clients that pay properly. I wouldn't be interested in arguing about deductions for repeated words or "fuzzy matches."

I have officially retired a couple of years ago, but still keep working. However, I am now able to choose the projects that I like best because I no longer have to work for a living.

You don't need to be "wealthy" to retire. You just need to have enough. And yes, if you love your work you will never retire anyway (although you might slow down a little). For all translators who have not done so yet, I suggest you start planning how you're going to fund yourself as you get into your later years.

I started freelancing in 2006 when I retired from my in-house position and since then I have been receiving a comfortable pension. I don't need to worry about my income, but I’m sure my brain would suffer if I didn’t work (I'm hoping that by keeping my brain active, I will keep Alzheimer's at bay). My plan is to keep on working (health permitting) as long as my clients continue to send work. I probably would work less hours if I happened to win a “big jackpot”…

I think translation may help me to fight the Alzheimer's disease, only my health conditions can stop me from working.

Continue to work as what? Translator?

NO. That would be like having a...turkey farm...and insisting on going on a...fava-bean diet. It's just illogical and unrealistic.

But, one might definitely work on having a better farm, better livestock, better business tier.

Here in Denmark the state pension covers the basic necessities, but increasingly, some kind of supplement is necessary. Either savings or earnings.

Danes have a saying: ´You can neither live on it nor die of it!´ (Det kan du hverken leve eller dø af!) It certainly applies to a pension - if you want to travel and see friends, not just stay alive, you need more.
However, if you work more than a certain level, which is gradually going up, you are taxed until it barely pays to

That suits me fine - I work about half time and live frugally (I call it environment-friendly!) most of the time. Now and then I splash out on a trip - either a few days´ pure holiday to see glass art, or a family visit to England, Sweden or Italy.

I enjoy my work - I can pick and choose jobs, which is a luxury, but I might drop it and work for a local non-profit if I did not need the money for my other activities.

Nah May 26, 2022

I like translating but not that much.

There are lots of other things I'd like to have a go at once I'm in a position to retire.

Hell no May 26, 2022

I love my job, but there are many other things I want to do, and, though I'm not burned out yet, I think I will be in 20 years.
I'll stop as soon as I can.

Looking at people much older than me, I can clearly see that when you are over 80, good work is the main thing to keep your body and brain from decaying. My plan is to live to 110 or so.

The pension here in Spain is paltry, and in the US, where I'm from, even worse.

Denmark ... a very civilized country. Don't underestimate what you get there. Not to mention the medical care, the education ... the beer ; ) My mother spoke fluent Danish, and almost lived there, her father was from Sweden. Scandinavia is marvellous

Even though it seems I no longer have to work (but they keep warning us senior citizens over here that we should, with dire predictions about the, at least, partial demise of Social Security, starting in 2036, with deep cuts for all recipients) because of yearly COLA raises (but one can't necessarily count on those anymore, either, certainly not in amounts that keep up with inflation), I still, most likely, will take on projects that suit my fancy, seem interesting, and/or which I deem to be of ... My most important clients, if you can believe it, have been much older than I am. Their field of expertise has been history. I don't know if it's true over in Europe, which is where about 98 % of my clients originate, but here in the US, our colleges and universities started to eliminate their history departments (many traditional undergraduates don't even know who Adolph Hitler was, or can't even recognize him in a photograph), as well as their foreign language departments, several years ago. So I feel like I'm becoming a bit of a dinosaur, not only in the general scheme of things, but when it comes to the kind of translation and other kinds of writing work that are being requested anymore. A lot of prospective clients seem to think my rates are too high, anyway.
