Tabby Weaving

English to Spanish Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Weaving
I am translating an elementary school lesson on Native American weaving techniques (English to Spanish). Here is the entire context:

"In this lesson students learn about the history of weaving and the difference between a TABBY WEAVING and tapestry weaving. People have been making tapestries for thousands of years. The oldest known tapestries were made in ancient Egypt during the time of the pharaohs over 3000 years ago. Very old tapestries have been found in South America, in southwestern United States, the Middle East, India, China, and Japan. Tapestries are special because of the way they are woven. In a simple tabby weave, the weaver uses only one color at a time. In tapestries, two or more colors meet on the same row and interlock to create a design. Students created a plan called a cartoon. They then use several of the interlocking techniques learned to make their plan (cartoon) come to life."

Is there a standard way to say this in Spanish? Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks.

tejido plano

“Tabby weaving” is together with twill (tejido cruzado o sarga) the basic type of textile: There seems to be at least another main option to refer to this kind of weave (tabby weave/weaving or plain weave), which results in, no surprise, several possible renderings into Spanish. I think that “tejido plano” is a generally accepted translation, that can work in Latin America as well.

Plain weave, also called Tabby Weave, simplest and most common of the three basic textile weaves. It is made by passing each filling yarn over and under each warp yarn, with each row alternating, producing a high number of intersections. Plain-weave fabrics that are not printed or given a surface finish have no right or wrong side. They do not ravel easily but tend to wrinkle and have less absorbency than other weaves.

Tafetán
Español: Textil rígido, generalmente de tejido plano, a veces con un cordoncillo fino cruzado y con una superficie lustrosa suave en ambos lados; originalmente de seda, hoy de diferentes fibras.
Inglés: Crisp textile, typically in plain weave, sometimes with a fine crosswise rib and a smooth lustrous surface on both sides, originally of silk, now of various fibers.

What Is a Tabby Weave?
Tabby weaving is the most common pattern of weaving and is sometimes called "plain weaving" or "calico weaving". It is a simple weave to do and is usually used for sheets and tea towels. It is done by weaving the "weft" through the "warp" alternately over and under the warp threads.
