German term

klimatisch ausgleichende Baustoffe

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering building materials
This is an article about a new school that is being built to high ecological standards in a hot climate. One of the environmentally-friendly aspects listed is:
"Verwendung klimatisch ausgleichender Baustoffe"
No further explanation of what this means is given. Other items on the list include:
"Regenerative Energie"
"Umweltschonende Verfahren"

I was wondering whether it could be translated with "climatic compensation" or "climatically compensated...", but that is just a guess. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Discussion

Lancashireman May 23, 2013:
climate-equalising A search yields hits (with an -izing suffix) from patent websites, which is always discouraging. However, there surely has to be more to this than 'sensitivity'.

climate-sensitive building materials

Example from link below:

"“Another growing business trend we’re seeing in Brisbane is sustainable property development and improvement, as developers and home owners focus on making homes ‘greener’ with climate sensitive building materials, smart wiring, alternative energy and water sensitive plumbing,” he said. "

"Climate-adjusting" may be another option. Only one hit though.
"Bamboo, one of the earth’s softest and most climate-adjusting materials has now made it’s way..."

agree philgoddard : Yes, it presumably means they're good insulants.

Thanks, Wendy.
neutral Teresa Reinhardt : I'm imagining blinds that close (sensor/motor); but I think they really mean sensitivity to climate change = sustainability (e.g., bamboo grows faster than trees, so it's more sustainable, supposedly))

Thanks for that input, Teresa.
agree Eleanore Strauss : actually there is a concept of climate-compensating materials. That means they are sensitive to the changes in temperature and humidity and thus climate sensitive. Does not relate to climate change.

building materials that balance [room/interior] climate

English will not necessarily have a compact term like this; I'd use this explanation

bioclimatic building materials

I have been researching this subject a lot of late and bioclimatic is a term used primarily to describe building design but the materials used to achieve such a design could also be termed bioclimatic, although this gets far fewer hits. a bioclimatic building responds to changes in temperature/humidity by balancing those changes through insulation, breathable membranes, ventilation etc.

environmentally neutral building materials

Climate in the sense of not contributing to climate change.
The reference below indicates that the phrase does not necessarily refer to internal room conditions. Greenwash phraseology.
Example sentence:

Der natürliche Baustoff überzeugt durch hohe Stabilität und einfache Verarbeitbarkeit, ausgleichende klimatische Eigenschaften und vielfältige Optik
