: doesn't sound like English. the Linguee translations have a warning triangle and don't appear to have been translated by native English speakers. https://www.linguee.com/german-english/translation/baufachha...

: I don't like linguee either--actually, I hate it and I wish people would stop posting links to it. Most of the time, it's awful. But even a broken clock is right twice a day.

: really doesn't sound like common usage. Who uses the word merchants?

Thomas Pfann
: Common usage here in the UK. Yellow Pages list 'Builders' merchants' and if you ask anyone on the street where the next builders' merchant is, they will know what you mean. It's where tradesmen (not necessarily the general public) buy their materials.

or construction retailers - US English (I am thinking Home Depot;
hardware stores might fall in this category, too.

Discussion
RE merchant:
Michael hastened to add that his answer was for US English.
I think this is a UK/US difference. Martina needs UK EN, so I agreed where I did.
Really, it'll just take a few seconds:
Google for "builders merchant" (use quotes, ofc) by adding site:uk and have a quick look at the results. There are so many British companies that use the term, I can't possibly list them all in this d-box. I've already posted a few examples below. And no, these links aren't outdated.
Best wishes

There's even an award (UK):

I can't post them all; I'll still be at it tomorrow. I thought of buldings supplies, but this seems good enough.

Should be this here:

Funny someone says builders' merchants doesn't sound like English. It's the exact term both UK websites use.
There are possibly hundreds of others:

http://www.builderdepot.co.uk

and so on.
Wenn nicht "suppliers", dann vielleicht "wholesalers" oder geht es hier auch um den Einzelhandel?
