Gut, da die Frage für den Frager ist, versuche ich mal mit mir selber zu brainstormen, welche Möglichkeiten in meinem Hirn sonst noch stattfinden, womit ich nichts gegen "erbitterte Kämpfe" habe sagen wollen.

Blutige Kämpfe fanden statt.
Teilnehmer müssen sich die Köpfe eingeschlagen haben.
es musste ein (blutiges) Gemetzel stattgefunden haben.
es musste Blut geflossen sein.
es musste mit harten Bandagen gekämpft worden sein.
die Teilnehmer sind mit langen Messern aufeinander los gegangen.
... es war eine Tagung der langen Messer.
ging nicht ohne Blutvergießen ab.
nachher leckten die Teilnehmer ihre Wunden.
und ja: auch "bis auf*s Messer bekämpft" ist natürlich auch eine Möglichkeit.
