Ich würde in diesem Zusammenhang "beunruhigt" nehmen :-)

überrascht; aufgeschreckt

Either of these might fit; Terence is right I think in suggesting this is not a particularly good use of "alarmed", unless of course the subject was intending to ignore any instructions he had about the job in hand. Much still depends on the further context, though...
