Naser Fraser has spoken of the "subaltern counter public" of American feminism with its communicative networks and its cultural and political impact of the system.
Jurgen Habermas aruged that the public sphere was that space where private people could come together as a public and in turn critique the activities of the state. They did this in physical arenas like salons and coffeehouses. They did this in media like newspapers, and academic journals. They used their critical faculties rather than their status and prestige to generate consensus, and participated in these spaces as equals, their status and prestige “bracketed” or put off to the side so as not to get in the way of the arguments they made.
Critics, arguing that Habermas’ conception of the ideal public sphere was far too narrow, argued that subordinated groups (women, non-whites, etc.) created “counterpublics” where they too came together in order to develop identities, interests, and needs in opposition to that of the public sphere.

Subaltern στο συγκεκριμένο πεδίο και τη δουλειά της Fraser σημαίνει τις κατώτερες , κυριαρχούμενες και καταπιεσμένες κοινωνικές τάξεις. Είναι αυτοί που είναι "από κάτω." Ίσως να είναι αναφορά στον Γκράμσι.
Public είναι το κοινό, η ομάδα, αλλά είναι επίσης αναφορά στη δημόσια σφαίρα του Χάμπερμας.
Ο όρος σαν σύνολο "subaltern counter-public" σημαίνει κατώτερες υποομάδες στον αντίποδα της κυρίαρχης δημόσιας σφαίρας. Προφανώς, από τη στιγμή που η Fraser το ορίζει στον αντίποδα και σε αντίθεση με την ιδανική δημόσια σφαίρα του Χάμπερμας το counter-public είναι κοινό/ομάδα αντι-δημόσια, αντι-κοινή. Δεν λέει όμως πουθενά "ιδιωτική" (που είναι και αυτό μια άλλη σφαίρα). Έχει δηλαδή διττή σημασία. Από τη στιγμή που είναι όρος που έχει επινοήσει συγκεκριμένος συγγραφέας, δεν μπορούμε να πάμε σε ελεύθερη μετάφραση.
Το subaltern θα το απέδιδα ως υποτελές, υποδεέστερο (υποδέεστερες κοινωνικές ομάδες), κυριαρχούμενο, υπάλληλο (αυτό που είναι κάτω από κάποιον άλλο).
Το counter-public: αντι-κοινό. To ενωτικό θα το κράταγα για να τονίσω τη σχέση μεταξύ των δύο λέξεων.
Πιο ελεύθερα: υποτελής αντι-κοινωνική ομάδα, αλλά εκεί ξεφεύγεις ίσως αρκετά.
