French term

extrême avancée

French to English Other Geography History Piece
I'm having a difficult time adapting this phrase to the rest of the translated context. Is it something like "extends the farthest along Grande Bleue on the French coastline?" I assume it is referring to Toulon (la ville), and "celui-ci" refers to the port, and does "celui de Gène" refer to a gulf or port? These 2 words (and the phrase I have entered) are really throwing me off.

Context:

"Les rois de France ont fait de Toulon le plus grand port de guerre de la Méditerranée. En effet, **extrême avancée** de la côte française sur la Grande Bleue, celui-ci surveille à la fois le golfe de Lyon et celui de Gènes."

Mille Mercis!

Drmanu49 Dec 5, 2007:
and it is gulf in both cases (de Gênes et du Lion).
Drmanu49 Dec 5, 2007:
Sorry, add an s to fishing!
Drmanu49 Dec 5, 2007:
I guess it is clear from the source text that it is the Southernmost French military/navy "war" port for French kings at that time. It seems clear this is not about fihing or leisure.

furthest outpost

retains the semi-military terminology.

And "celui" does indeed refer to "le golfe".

Thanks, Barbara!
neutral Drmanu49 : outpost would be outside of France...and that is also the way I understand remote ;-).

thanks, you're partially right! ("beyond the main body of the army"), but it can also be "a remote settlement or stronghold" (Chambers)/St can be remote without being beyond the borders

This tells you that la Grande Bleue is the Mediterranean

the extrême avancée means that Toulon is on the point of the Coast in the South of France that extends the furthest south into the Mediterranean

It means that Toulon, at France's southern tip in the Mediterranean, is in a good position to survey the Gulf of Lyon to the one side and the Gulf of Genoa (Italy) to the other

no but it is what it SAYS here

furthest encroachment

Geographically, Toulon is the most southerly extension of the French coast in that area, and as the source text says, it was made into a major naval base for that reason.
I like "outpost" (Jonathan's suggestion) but I don't think the text justifies a military term at this point.

agree Francis Marche : Disagree with B D Finch: the Roussillon coast has SPAIN on one side, whilst Toulon has the French coast line extending East and West.
