French term

accordant le prolongement de la maturité

French to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture vineyard management and harvesting
Les découpages intra-parcellaires, menés grâce à la cartographie satellitaire pour la seconde année consécutive, révèlent encore leur pertinence, ******* accordant le prolongement de la maturité ******* sur les parties le plus vigoureuses

------

The "découpages intra-parcellaires" refers to "intra-plot zoning" and "cartographie satellitaire" is satellite imagery. This wine-producing area had been hit by hailstorms in the run-up to harvesting (a fortnight earlier) thereby "diluting" the berries.

Meanwhile, the simple vocab of the term in question has me stumped - what exactly is it saying? ... that it advocated allowing more time for ripening? Or what? If anyone can explain this clearly in fairly simple terms, I'd be jolly grateful - many thanks!

NB: A basic explanation is probably all I'm looking for, unless there is a specific technical term for this!

Discussion

Carol Gullidge (asker) Mar 29, 2012:
update/client's feedback just to let you both know that in the light of my comments on this passage, the client accepts the English translation provided, but has amended the source text as follows: "Les découpages intra-parcellaires, menées grâce à la cartographie satellitaire pour la seconde année consecutive, révèlent encore leur pertinence, en permettant le prolongement de la maturité sur les parties les plus vigoureuses "

Once again, many thanks to both of you for your help!

more context I'm sorry, I didn't explain as fully as possible - also I'm afraid I included some misleading info :(

Intra-plot zoning is a technique using satellite imagery to determine the vegetative growth rate in different plots or parts of plots - hence "les parties les plus vigoreuses". The technology had proved its worth for the second year running , "accordant le prolongement..."

And I mentioned that the area was hit by hailstorms - this was true, but what I SHOULD have explained is that this particular vineyard was not badly affected. I'm sorry about this!

enabling an extension of the ripening process

One recent trend ...in California is to extend the "hang-time" (i.e. delay harvest) of fruit with the expectation of increased or better flavour development.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks again! ..."extending the hang time" was very helpful!"

allowed (the strongest sections) to continue to maturity

'prolonguement' can also mean 'continuation' as well as 'extension' - my take is that the 'intraplot zones' thanks to sattelite mapping, have proved/shown their importance, and have allowed the strongest parts to continue to mature' (rather than being wiped out by the hailstorms

many thanks Dr Lofthouse! I'm afraid that my initial info wasn't as helpful as it might have been
