Suggestioni in Carl Schmitt

http://www.reverbnation.com/arcanic
"Our Name
Many people ask us what our name means and it is pronounced. Arcanic is a unique derivation of the word arcane, which means mysterious, secret, or understood by few. As far as pronunciation is concerned, Arcanic rhymes with the word mechanic."
Questo è un gruppo musicale che spiega il senso della parola.
Ha poche corrispondenze perché poco usata, ma troverai alcuni link su google:
http://www.hathormoon.co.uk/arcanic-rune-stones-187-p.asp
http://www.google.com/search?hl=it&client=opera&rls=it&hs=X2...
(of an arcanic nature)
La ricerca deve essere ristretta sul motore di ricerca, perché spesso il termine viene usato come nickname o nei giochi.
"Arcanico" viene da "arcana", termine utilizzato nel mondo magico:
http://www.mondoditenebra.it/file/maghi_il_risveglio__lessic...
Arcanum (pl.

...
I do not know if the correct spelling is archanic, but I prefer this to arcane.
It could make smile, as many other philosophical terms.

Note from asker:
And in fact rereading my translation where I have used arcane, I would just take the word "archanic" for an embarassing mistake. |
Ciao Emanuela, your last reference seems to have clinched it for me. The author has put "arcanic" in quotes clearly indicating that it is a term coined by Schmitt. However the more I learn about this guy, the less I like him and his philosophy. Best thrown into the deepest dustbin of history we can find. |

: Your first link (reverbnation) is explicit in saying that the word does *not* exist in English - that it's a "unique derivation" - in other words, a coinage. (It might still exist - but that link actually undercuts the argument)

It is not so much used in Italian indeed, but the author uses it and the solution could be to put it between brackets, as in the text found about Schmitt. The word seems used especially for this philosopher, probably coming from "arcana imperii".I suppose.

Comment: "Thanks Emanuela, especially for the hard work. The answer is clearly "arcanic" where the inverted commas are very necessary."

Having googled Schmitt (sorry - not up to speed on him!) I found "The work of Carl Schmitt, on its face, presents us with enigmas; it is esoteric, arcane, words that recur both in scholarship about Schmitt and in his own writings".
So why not "enigmatic nature", if not straightforward "arcane nature"?
I think you have to accept that arcanico = arcano.

Right, well I have had a look. It's not in De Mauro or Zingarelli (monolingue), or Florio (I had a look just in case!).
The Shorter Oxford English gives "arcanal" which is interesting - as well as arcanum/arcana.
So, perhaps you're right - you might have to face up to the professor!

I posted the above before reading Emanuela's note - it's interesting that the term appears in use, but not in the dictionaries (or the ones I looked in, at least!).

One last try - next time I'm in the NLS (Edinburgh) I could look in the Grande Dizionario (Tommaseo-Battaglia). I like the idea of "potatos" - a little more down to earth!

Note from asker:
Lucinda, my real question is whether the word "arcanico" actually exists in Italian. I think it is a mistake for arcano, which means arcane, mysterious, secret, obscure, etc. Ma esiste la parola "arcanico" oppure si tratta di un errore per "arcano"? |
If the word doesn't exist, then I have to tell the editor, but I don't want to tell a university professor that the word doesn't exist unless I'm sure! |
My suspicion is that it is a bit like potatos, an embarassing mistake for potatoes. |
Forgot, thanks for looking. Its not in Devoto Oli either. |
Shouldn't worry too much, Seem to have a fair focus on the word. I'm just going to email the editor (head of faculty) and ask if he's considering censoring the whole article. If you read the whole wiki page on that guy, you will see why. |
Thanks for the useful help Lucinda |
