Coliflora is a rare term on the internet! Is anyone able to confirm that they mean coliforms or, more specifically, fecal coliforms? And why would they be absent in fecal sample? Isn't a fecal sample a natural habitat for fecal coliforms? After all this isn't drinking water!

Discussion

Anne Schulz Feb 1, 2017:
Fortunately not If 1 or 2 ml of stool don't yield any coli bacteria in culture, it does not mean that the patient's intestines are devoid of coli flora.
achisholm Feb 1, 2017:
Absent - death The patient would at extremely high risk if all strains of E. coli were absent. I agree that they probably mean no harmful coliform strains, or strains that shouldn't be present in that location.
Shera Lyn Parpia (asker) Jan 29, 2017:
Hi Phil, I thought about that ... but why wouldn't they say e.coli absent?
philgoddard Jan 29, 2017:
E. coli flora?

normal E. coli

E.coli bacteria come in a large variety of strains, some of the normal and helpful, others producing strong pathogenic toxins. The "flora" usually refers to the normal inhabitants present in a healthy bowel environment. Hence, you could say, "normal E.coli absent" or, as philgoddard suggested, "E. coli flora absent".
Absent (or reduced) they are, if they have been flushed out of the bowel by severe diarrhea, or if they have been overgrown and displaced by other microorganisms in an unfavourable bowel environment which may be caused by e.g. unhealthy nutrition or longstanding antibiotic therapy.

"Coliform bacteria", as you said, is a term used to describe the presence or absence of fecal bacteria in drinking water. These tests mostly involve biochemical rather than (more expensive and time-consuming) cultural methods, and cannot reliably distinguish between E.coli and other similar fecal bacteria such as Klebsiella or Enterobacter.

agree Inter-Tra : 'normal' is reduntant. 'E.' stands for 'Escherichia' https://healdove.com/misc/Escherichia-or-E-coli-Intestinal-F...
