"Gran parte della fortuna e prosperità di San Daniele deriva dall’essere stata per oltre sette secoli feudo patriarcale; ed è il Patriarca che assegna a San Daniele il privilegio di attivare un mercato. L’attestazione più antica di **mercato franco** risale al 1063."

Is this simply 'free market'? I've found this translation online from a few sources (mostly about Thiene), but I just wanted to be sure that there isn't a better translation that I'm missing.
