Italian term

in linea di massima

Italian to English Marketing Marketing / Market Research pet food company
This is a common phrase . I have heard it often but dont know what it means exactly. The phrase " . La richiesta calorica è infatti legata: all'intensità dell’attività fisica, alla sua durata, alla temperatura ambientale, ecc…
In linea di massima, in un cane sottoposto ad un’ora di attività fisica i fabbisogni energetici subiscono un aumento del 10%, se invece l’attività si protrae per diverse ore l’incremento di energia stimato è circa del 40-50%. "

disagree Tom in London : sorry, "in linea di massima" means "approximately". "Generally speaking" would be "in genere".

approximately is circa Tom, but you have on average, around, normally. In linea di massima direi che è la stessa cosa, in questo contesto.
agree SYLVY75 : yes, this is a correct interpretation in this context.

In the main

This is one way to say this I would say. It has the meaning of this phrase, but I like it especially as it is often used to lay out a theme of an argument or to balance up an idea with a justification. So I reckon it would work.

approximately [see note]

But not at the beginning of the sentence. Translated, the sentence should read "The energy requirement of a dog increases by approximately 10% if it is exercised for one hour" - and so on.
Peer comment(s):

agree James (Jim) Davis : In linea di massima, senza entrare nei dettagli, condivido Tom, ma non puoi tradurre questa frase con approximately.
