"Mata-mata" or "mat-mata"?

Proposed translations

2 hrs
Portuguese term (edited): mata-mata
Selected

"life-and-death" or "do-or-die"

Looking at the sentence in question, "life-and-death" or "do-or-die" seem to fit well. "Mata-mata" in a sports context would be translated as "sudden death"
Peer comment(s):

disagree Fred Neild (X) : sudden death é a morte súbita, hoje gol de ouro // Hi Bett, sports are constantly used as reference for the business world, including presentations given by successful sports professionals to businessmen, these metaphors are usual in business literature

agree Bett : do or die (they are not talking about football) it is about competition isn't it???

decisive

I believe it is a metaphor as in the 'mata-mata' phase of a soccer championship. So this would be the final game, something decisive.

If you want to maintain the metaphor you could say this new feature is the "playoff".

Not sure if this is the context but this is the meaning of mata-mata in Brazil

Alfred B. said,
"Decisive does not capture the intensity of the situation. The original question talks about competition in business and how the company will be "esmagado" by competition if certain measures are not taken."

@Alfred B.
I believe that 'decisive' and 'playoff' are sufficiently intense for anyone acquainted with the high level of competition within sports. Sucessful sports professionals give seminars for businessmen on teamwork, pressure, etc.

The sports reference in the question of Joana is manifest.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Alfred Benet : Decisive does not capture the intensity of the situation. The original question talks about competition in business and how the company will be "esmagado" by competition if certain measures are not taken.

I appreciate your opinion and explanation regarding the meaning of the question, however you should review KudoZ rules concerning disagrees (note I have put a disagree to Alfred B., hope this hasn't triggered his disagree, that would be really sad) :-(
