Turkish term

ASAL Ks.

Turkish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Military service
In a document concerning a young man's military service I read under As. S (I suppose 'askerlik subesi'): a registration number followed by /ASAL Ks. (1985, the year he was born). Does anyone know what ASAL Ks stands for or is this part of the registration number?

Thank you for any advice/suggestions!

Tim Drayton Nov 23, 2011:
ASAL Ks. If the use of 'ASAL Ks.' resembles the following:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:tgO7tkl...

"(25) Yükümlü hakkında Millî Savunma Bakanlığınca teklif makamına daha önce herhangi bir yazı gönderilmiş ise tarih ve sayısı yazılır. Örnek: “MSB 07.11.2009 / MİY: 1130-843-09/ASAL D.Yd.Sb.Ş.Ert.Ks.”, “Trabzon 08.10.2008 / ASAL: 1130-213-08/Asal Ks.

then in my opinion it will remain 'ASAL Ks.' in the translation. This is part of an official reference number given by the authority to identify this piece of correspondence.
Faruk Atabeyli Nov 23, 2011:
In countries where military service is compulsary it can not be called recruitment, it is conscription. We are oredered to go, not asked.
Mehmet Ali Bahıt Nov 23, 2011:
Ok. Got it.
Tim Drayton Nov 23, 2011:
Recruitment For example, in the UK there are army recruitment offices because people there sign up to serve in the army for a certain period in return for pay. This is recruitment because it is voluntary.
Mehmet Ali Bahıt Nov 23, 2011:
Recruitment... @ Faruk Atabeyli:
I see your point and agree with the general principle, but I am not sure whether recruitment involves a voluntary action or not. In case of recruitment, the recruiter (in this case, the army) is taking on new people and the recruitees are passive in this process.

Do you mean that in the process of recruitment, people have to actively apply and the army chooses between candidates? Just trying to understand the nuance here.
Faruk Atabeyli Nov 23, 2011:
Exactly We did not enlist, neither did we get recruited. We got conscripted. We had no choice.
ATIL KAYHAN Nov 23, 2011:
Voluntary Action? Not in Turkey. Did any of us got enlisted voluntarily?
Faruk Atabeyli Nov 23, 2011:
Recruitment vs. conscription Recruitment (and even enlistment) involves a voluntary action. Conscription (or draft) would be more accurate.
Mehmet Ali Bahıt Nov 23, 2011:
ASAL could be the recruitment office as Salih1946 suggested, but the Ks. bit still makes me wonder.

@Salih1946: Could Ks. simply be the abbreviation for "Kısım"?
Faruk Atabeyli Nov 23, 2011:
A specific office It is the specific abbreviation for the conscription office. http://www.asal.msb.gov.tr/
