français term

maison carrée / bâtisse carrée

français vers anglais Art / Littérature Architecture
This term describes the style of a manor house. 'Square house' or 'square building' doesn't seem quite right and I am wondering whether there is a better term in English.
Proposed translations (anglais)
4 roman style house

Manor with a lot of pomp and circumstance....
Helen Hagon (asker) Mar 1, 2012:
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Unfortunately the rest of the text doesn't really give any clues. A photo of the house shows a fairly plain rectangular building with three rows of casement windows, which is very different to the maison carrée in Nîmes. I think, for the purposes of this translation I will use something along the lines of 'maison carrée, a rectangular manor house'.

Context In order to help you properly here, you really do need to provide at least one sentence in which the term appears, preferably the surrounding paragraph.
Just Opera Feb 26, 2012:
IMO refers to fortified aspect of a manor house i.e.

carrée = (Argot) (Militaire) Chambre, logement.

wikipedia (form entry on manor house)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manor_house

"Although not typically built with strong fortifications as castles were, many manor-houses were partly fortified."

Does it look Palladian? Does the context suggest Palladian? Most of google images for maison carée look a bit like this. Something to consider, anyway.

The only other square houses I can think of are Georgian houses in the UK (clearly not all that much help).

"the style of a manor house" Maybe "neoclassical"? But this is in no way a translation. :-|

context Is there any more context which describes the shape or style of this manor house more accurately?

roman style house

Imitation of a roman temple like the famous "Maison Carrée" in Nîmes.

neutral cc in nyc : Main feature of some Roman homes was the atrium; other Roman homes were apartments. See http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/romans/architecture/hous... or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Roman_architecture#Hous... Not sure applicable here.

neutral Jack Dunwell : Well, I don't know. We have a maison Carrée here in Nay and it is built around a courtyard
