An intensive care unit (ICU) is an area designed and staffed to deliver the highest level of medical and nursing care to the sickest of patients that the hospital is capable of treating. Patients may be transferred to a “step-down” unit when their condition improves. This unit has special medical equipment and/or care that are not readily offered in a general medical or surgical unit. XXX Critical Care Department has four (4) Intensive Care Units with a total of 56 ICU and step-down beds on the 10th floor:
• Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) & step-down
• Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
• Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• Coronary Care Unit (CCU) & step-down.
