1. Waves (ocean)
Ok so im just going to put my thoughts about the first title card we see down here. So, the waves tend to have a huge meaning connected to emotion and I think that’s why they used waves as well as the ocean as a title card. Because the episode is where we first here Leah’s backstory. Leah tends to have waves of different emotions that she goes through and so the waves characterize that. Also, waves can be seen as the constant motion of life as the ocean continues and never stops moving, meaning that life still went on as normal even as the girls were put on that island, because they were sent there. Lastly, a wave can be seen as forthcoming events no matter what they are. They could resemble how this was going to happen and that whatever happens to the girls was imminent
2. Underwater (drowning)
Ok so the second title card looks to be underwater and so I believe it to be like drowning. And if you look up the meaning of drowning, it mostly means that it represents people’s deepest fears and/or death that they have never directly faced. And since it is rachel’s backstory, it could represent rachel’s fear of losing her identity or losing nora. Also, on the island rachel is overwhelmed and she tends to have turmoil with everything as well as her sister and so the drowning shown in the title card is possibly a warning for her to take a step back and stop pulling away (that’s why the episode ends with her making mends with nora)
3. Rain
For the rain in the third title card, rain could depict emotions as well because water is an essential description towards emotions. So, dot deal with trying to take care of her dad and mostly she doesn’t seem to express a lot of emotions towards her dad’s illness. So, since the rain symbolizes your feelings and emotions, it can express Dot’s inner emotions towards her father dying. Not to even mention that there is also a thunderstorm in this episode, which can be shown as the overwhelming feeling of emotions shown in most of the characters throughout the episode. Anyways, since they are raindrops in the title card, it may relate to something that has made someone cry (example: dot and her dad’s final moment + the sunset scene)
4. Sun through the grass
The grass is the thing that is mostly being symbolized in this title card and so I believe that grass is symbolic to not just toni, seeing as this is the episode with her backstory, but with all the girls on the island. Firstly, grass can be a symbol for community. This episode focuses on all of them, even though they split up into teams, trying to work together to build a shelter for all of them, a safe space. Also to mention that community means relationships with others and the grass in the title card seems to look as if its yellowing or dying which could mean that a relationship in someone’s (toni’s) life is dying (the martha fight bc of shelby) and that toni needs to water that grass or repair that friendship to reestablish their bond again. To add onto this, grass is never seen as just one blade of grass but a whole field of it which can symbolize that community as well but also that grass can symbolize being connected to others in some type of way. The girls are connected by the fact they are surviving on the island as well as each of them affecting the other. For example, Toni’s anger towards Shelby for believing she stole her best from her and how she has finally had it and her destruction of their fort leads to her and martha having a fight. Aka Toni hating shelby causes some trouble in her and martha’s friendship). Anyways, focusing on toni, grass grows and that can symbolize growth and prosperity. After her break up with Regan as well as the relationship itself, toni happens to grow from that loss to try and become a better person with her anger
5. Waterfall
Of course, the waterfall is the title card for the fifth episode which anyone would just simply guess it represents the waterfall fatin found for all of them but it can also be much more. The waterfall itself, if you look up the symbolism, can mean that severe disappointment will make you wiser. This can relate to fatin and her disappointment in her father, as well as how her parents reacted to her over how she reacted to her father’s cheating, and how she’s become wiser from it. How she took this trip’s chance to get away from the life her parent’s expected of her and finally be free of the shackles her parents placed on her. Waterfalls can also be a great release of emotion and renewal of spirit. This can be easily shown by how the girls look at fatin’s finding of the waterfall, giving them redundancy in spirit for their survival. However, if you again look deeper, it can also give the girls a newfound respect for fatin and realize she is more complex than they thought at first. Waterfalls also have a tendency to symbolize emotional and spiritual discharge in one’s persona, which can entail not just fatin’s backstory during the episode but in how leah and rachel bicker but in the end have each other’s backs when the other is in trouble. On a more positive note, and very specific in fatin’s journey, waterfalls can have positive symbolism that shows a person attempting to go further than they ever have and look at things from a happier perspective. Just like fatin went searching for something that could help contribute to their survival, doing probably the most she has ever done since landing on the island

Eu conheço como intertítulo. É aquela cena ou quadro que aparecia nos filmes mudos contendo o diálogo ou o título da cena. Espero que te ajude
Note from asker:
Sim, mas atualmente é "In modern film and television, title cards are used most commonly used as part of a historical drama's epilogue to explain what happened to the depicted characters after the conclusion of the story the audience has just seen." |
