U visokoškolskoj matematici češće je u upotrebi baza e (e ≈ 2.71828). Taj se broj naziva baza prirodnog logaritma jer se logaritam po toj bazi naziva prirodni logaritam (logaritam naturalis) i označava se simbolom ln.

log je uobičajena kratica za logaritam:
