French term

activation des oeuvres

French to English Law/Patents Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
The source text is a loan agreement between an art museum and a French cultural body, permitting the museum to borrow art work for its exhibition. The term in question comes from the following clause:

"L'emprunteur s'engage à prendre en charge les frais de fournitures diverses permettant l’activation des oeuvres”

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Discussion

CMcGinty (asker) Mar 9, 2011:
I believe the contract is designed to cover various types of art work but it seems to refer specifically in this case to a piece of contemporary art -a sculpture, made up of different pieces of metal, which, as far I can tell does not move, and cannot be interacted with.
Helen Shiner Mar 9, 2011:
@ CMcGinty I think it would be very useful to know what kind of artworks we are talking about here. Are they installations, paintings, kinetic in any way or static?
philgoddard Mar 9, 2011:
And it's paintings we're talking about?
CMcGinty (asker) Mar 9, 2011:
There is no further context supplied for what the "fournitures" might be, unfortunately.
philgoddard Mar 9, 2011:
Does it say after this sentence what the "fournitures" are?

installation/set up

Hi - I believe the sense is of setting up the pieces of work within the museum that is borrowing them. The link below has an interesting if lengthy discussion on the subject. HTH

agree cc in nyc : A lot of exhibits require special set-up; some installations even have moving parts.

agree kashew : maybe maintenance too - wear & tear?

agree Helen Shiner : I think this may be most likely, but I think I'd want to check with the client.

for the normal functioning of works

Seems likely these are works that use some consumable product while they are being exhibited.

allowing the works to be displayed

Hello,

Works cannot be "activer" if they aren't displayed, right?

I hope this helps.
