herbaceous border plant(s)

... is the only thing I found yet.
Perhaps it's implicit in this expression that it borders to shrub or wood or timber.

Introduced as an herbaceous border plant during the late 19th Century. The triffid- like Japanese Knotweed with it´s 6ft-8 ft tall hollow stems, heart shaped leaves and greenish white flowers now rates as one of the most pernicious weeds.

border shrubs / hedges

it's just another possibility

... An alternative includes using border shrubs, usually multi-stemmed, woody plants
found on the edge of the pond in areas that are flooded only periodically. ...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Armorel Young : I think there's some confusion here between border meaning flowerbed and border meaning Rand

forest / woodland edge plant(s)

I believe now that it should be "woodland or forest edge plants"!

Questions

You find a greater number of species on the forest edge because there is more light and water available at ground level. It's also possible that the presence of a trail or road facilitates the moving of seeds, which leads to a greater diversity of species.
The area is biologically dynamic because it is always trying to "move" from an open field habitat to a more forested habitat. A climax community has not been established yet.
Some species grow here that wouldn't grow in a forest or field because the proportions of sunlight, shade, an shelter are different from those locations. e.g. mustards grow better where there is more sunlight, and don't usually grow deep in a forest. Mayapples need shade and couldn't grow in an open field.

WOODLAND EDGE. Plants for a more or less open space with an occasional tree or shrub. In principle occasionally some sun.

Peer comment(s):

agree Gisela Greenlee : Woodland and woodland edge plants - forest plants would not be the same. They are talking about plants that can take shade provided by trees or other larger shrubs.

shrubbery along woodland fringes

...are possible with shrubbery in general or such thriving along the fringes of wooded areas...

I think shrubbery is the most inclusive of this type of low growing 'herbaceous' plants and readily understood by the reader
