German term

Abreaktion

Discussion

Alison MacG Mar 6, 2013:
FWIW Last Resort Dictionary for Technical Translators by Brigitte M. Walker offers "exhaustive reaction" for "Abreaktion", in the sense that the reaction is complete, no further reaction can take place.
I can see you are translating a patent. Here is another patent in which it has been translated in this way (although also in other ways):
VERFAHREN ZUR ABREAKTION SELBSTENTZÜNDLICHER STÄUBE IN EINER VAKUUMPUMPVORRICHTUNG
METHOD FOR REACTING SELF-IGNITING DUSTS IN A VACUUM PUMP DEVICE
PROCÉDÉ POUR ANNULER LA RÉACTION DES POUSSIÈRES AUTOINFLAMMABLES DANS UN DISPOSITIF DE POMPE À VIDE D’AIR
1. Verfahren zur Abreaktion selbstentzündlicher Stäube in einer trockenverdichtenden Vakuumpumpvorrichtung,
1. A method for exhaustive reaction of self-igniting dust in a dry-sealed vacuum pump device
... und zur vollständigen Abreaktion der Stäube
... and for fully exhaustive reaction of the dust

Heather McCrae Mar 6, 2013:
my entry hello Christine, just had someone question my apparent ability to answer questions like this, so, just for information, I have a BSc in Chemistry with German, and I have been a professional German to English freelance technical translator for the past 19 years. best regards, Heather
Cilian O'Tuama Mar 6, 2013:
Wobei? Hi Christine,
Can you show us how you've translated the rest of this paragraph?
And what exactly does the "dabei" refer back to?
Jonathan MacKerron Mar 5, 2013:
perhaps here in the sense of "discharge/release"?

reaction

basically the Si-H bond is breaking down or acting as a catalyst, driving a polymerisation reaction. German tends to numerous forms of "reaction", but essentially in English reaction covers the lot. so p.products are being formed in the acidic environment resulting from the a-salts produced from the reaction of the Si-H bonds .....
hope that helps
Heather
