Kann wohl nicht abutting im Sinne von Berührung sein, sonst wären ja die Füße unsinnig.

: I lilke 'bottom surface' the best of your suggestions; the German phrase means literaly 'the surface that rests on something' (on the floor in this case) [a paraphrase is probably in order]
