German term

im Abverkauf

German to English Other Food & Drink Food Counters
"Die gekühlte Schnellbedienebene in den Geräten "ABC" und "DEF" ist speziell für die Kühlung von Kuchen und flachen Torten ***im Abverkauf*** ausgelegt. Die Schnellbedienebene ist nicht zur Lagerung über einen längeren Zeitraum geeignet."

From a text about food cooling devices for food sale counters. According to the Collins dictionary, Abverkauf is Austrian German for "sale". But what about "im Abverkauf"? Would it be something like "intended for sale"? TIA for your help. Assistance is still awaited on my Schnellbedienebene question also - www.proz.com/kudoz/726038. TIA again for your help with that.

on sale (US)

In German "im Abverkauf" (common expression) means that goods are being offered at a reduced price.

Here are some other examples to ease comprehension:
Ich habe mir diese Schuhe ganz günstig im Abverkauf gekauft.
Bei *Firma XY* gibt es tolle Fernsehgeräte im Abverkauf.

Your suggestion "intended for sale" is ok but it does not clearly express whether the cakes are intended for sale at regular price(Verkauf) or at lower price (Abverkauf). And it's important to stress that the goods are sold at lower prices which also explains why they can be kept for a short period of time at a temperature that is not suited for long term storage.

My suggestion would therefore be something like "for cakes on sale" which means in Am. Engl. that they are offered at a lower price.

(Reference: Native speaker living in Austria, Oxf. Adv. Learn. Dict.)

I hope this helps you.

Warm regards
Claudia

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This was a pretty convincing explanation, so I'm going to go with it. But do you know what might be said in UK English? I suspect it's probably much the same, actually. Anyway, thanks for your help - much appreciated. Thanks also to Edith for a reasonable suggestion."
