German term

Frieden-verkündend

German to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Context:

Die Frieden verkündende und Frieden schaffende Botschaft der großen Weltreligionen ist nicht neu.

How do I distinguish between "Frieden verkündend" and "Frieden schaffend"? Both "peace-bringing message" and "peaceful message" seem to more or less mean both.

Discussion

Annett Kottek (X) Nov 28, 2009:
@ Trudy I really like 'promoting', as well as Bernhard's suggestion of 'peace-bringing', I think that gets to the heart of the matter. But to incorporate both ideas into a decent sentence? The 'peace-promoting and peace-bringing message of the world's major religions...' doesn't really work for me. How about rephrasing it to something like this: ‘That the world’s major religions have a message of peace for us (which is in fact twofold, in that they not only promote peace, but are also able to deliver it) is no news.

Then again, the distinction may have been made for purely rhetorical reasons, and it would suffice to just translate it as their ‘message of peace’. See context.
Trudy Peters Nov 27, 2009:
Promoting anyone? Message proclaiming and promoting peace.
Bernhard Sulzer Nov 27, 2009:
two things I also see two parts of the message: proclaiming peace and bringing peace. Here a few more suggestions: That the message of proclaiming and bringing peace is inherent in/part of all large world religions is not (nothing) new.
Proclaiming and bringing peace is a message spread/given/disseminated by all large world religions. That is nothing new.
Deborah Shannon Nov 27, 2009:
Possibly the phrasing is elliptical rather than redundant, i.e. major world religions have long exhorted [their followers] to proclaim and bring about peace.
Annett Kottek (X) Nov 27, 2009:
peace-loving and peace-proclaiming? maybe? Their message proclaims peace (‘verkünden’) and creates, or promises, peace (‘schaffen’). In the first instance, I’d say they love peace and hence spread the message of peace, in the second instance they claim that they can indeed bring peace.
gangels (X) Nov 27, 2009:
Perhaps just 'the message of peace and its blessings for mankind, postulated by the world's large religions, is not unique'
David Williams (asker) Nov 27, 2009:
...as does "the message of peace".

peace proclaiming

...might work here. My first thought, however, was "peace heralding" (see http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/herald ).

I suppose it should be with a hyphen, i.e., "peace-proclaiming."

Added after your note: Personally, I would probably try to rearrange the sentence, i.e., something like "...the message (of whoever) proclaiming and bringing peace is nothing new."

:)
Note from asker:
i.e. "the peace-proclaiming and peace-bringing message of religion"? I'm not 100% convinced, what do you (and others) think? (I did try to ask with both of the terms in the question box, but someone saw fit to nuke that question for me :-( )

the message of peace... see below

Die Frieden verkündende und Frieden schaffende Botschaft der großen Weltreligionen ist nicht neu.

The message of peace and the need to (efforts to) create peace is nothing new to all the major religions of the world.

better to restructure the sentence
