when I am in translator capacity but... I work for agencies only so they take care of things like passing jobs along in case something happens on my side. I refer my colleagues to them but I don't need anyone's company when I translate and I don't need "meetings and tagups". The agency does its job - sends files and glossaries, I do my job, the editor does h/h. Period.
For interpreters, on the other hand, networking is vital. Aside of the highest levels (EU, UN, top government things etc.... See more when I am in translator capacity but... As one who had to develop pretty much in isolation, I feel that networking with colleagues is highly important. We can share resources, points of view, market knowledge, expertise and projects with one another. Another vital aspect is that by getting together we can work to improve our profession, our image before the community, our working conditions and compensation.
I believe all the above is something we should all strive for, and it cannot be done in isolation.

I'm stunned. I thought this would be one poll on which virtually everyone would agree. I can't imagine being a translator in isolation; a perfect translator has to know both languages perfectly and know all there is to know about the subject matter, and that's not humanly possible!
I'll be watching this discussion with great interest.

Some people work in teams sharing the same job. This is what I meant when I gave my answer - I am a loner when it comes to translation. If I'm happy with the subject and the glossaries, if any, then the next thing that makes me happy is being left alone with respect to that particular job until the due date.
Other than that... was this the question regarding socializing with birds of the feather or looking for/giving occasional help or advise? If so, then I don't even see the point... Important isn't the word I'd have used, but contact and exchange of ideas with others in the profession is highly useful and encouraging. I like actually working alone, but greatly appreciate the help and advice I receive from colleagues from time to time, not least here at Proz.

Now these are two different things entirely. Networking is one thing, working another. I for one could never work on a team, I work alone. Our kind of work is best done in isolation, but networking with colleagues is valuable for the reasons stated.

All my life I have been a great believer in networking per se. I consider it very important to establish a relationship with the people you have to work with, near or far. It means making an effort, for example, going the extra mile for someone who may never return the favour. But, what goes round, must come round AND usually does.

Obviously, if you are no good at what you do, no amount of networking will make you a success but, for someone competent, it can be the icing on the cake.
We all do it: when you need a plumber, an electrician, a cleaning lady, a lawyer, a banker..... you tend to start by looking through your address book, asking your friends, by networking in other words. The word of mouth solution is a godsend.
Back to the original question: is networking with (other) translators important ? My reply: no more than networking with other sorts of people and probably less than some. ▲ Collapse
