can assimiles ever be "dependents"? seems like it could be Total wage earners and dependents but can't find anything in the dictionaries indicating that that's possible. other items in same section:

Given this is an income tax return, the term "payments" as suggested above would not be very appropriate.
Alternatively: "Total income by way of salary and wages and the like"
an alternative for "income" is "earnings".
I don't feel that there is any connotation of "dependents" at all in this context.
