Spanish term

"hablar por la herida"

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature literature (expression/colloquialism)
I understand this expression, but for the life of me I can't come up with a way to phrase it in English that sounds good. It's being used in a book as a sort of double-entendre, i.e. first "speaking through the wound" is sort of like saying "that's your pain talking", i.e. the person is hurt (emotionally) and therefore saying things they might not otherwise say. But in this case, it is also (more) literal, in the sense that it is referring to a man who has a literal wound, which he got in a car accident that killed his wife and daughter.

So, he is alive and bitter and says mean, nasty things, because he is "hablando por la herida".

So far all I have been able to think is things like "a living, breathing wound" or "speaking through (one's) pain", both of which sound awful!

By the way, this is a text from Spain, but a Mexican friend tells me they say it there as well.

Ideas? Thanks!

I agree more context may be helpfull. How about, "you are so wounded you only talk about your pain" or "you only let your pain do the talking"

Hi All, I'm sorry -- I should have stated this: in a conversation, after the man explains all the reasons why he prefers to be alone, an acquaintance says "lo único que haces es hablar por la herida".
Carol Gullidge Apr 17, 2015:
Even more context?! Your explanation of your understanding of the term is great, but it would be even more helpful to have the exact circumstances, along with the surrounding paragraph or dialogue
Cecilia Gowar Apr 17, 2015:
Context It would be good to have the original context in Spanish. In any case "that's your pain talking" sounds good.
Simon Bruni Apr 17, 2015:
What's the sentence? Often, these things are best reworded at sentence level.

let your pain/wound do the talking

"you are just letting your wound/pain do the talking".
More original context would have been helpful.

Thanks Christine! Me too. I gave the other option because it might fit in the wider context.

It's only natural for you to feel/talk like that after what you've been through

..or words to that effect… A rather longer and less literal version of your own suggestion

In fact I like your own idea of something along the lines of "That's your pain /sorrow /anger /bitterness talking"
Peer comment(s):

agree Denise Phelps : Esp. like "That's your X/Y/Z talking" (which the OP *didn't* suggest).

many thanks Denise :)
agree Charles Davis : "That's the/your pain talking" seems good to me. Your longer suggestion certainly sounds very natural.

Thanks Charles :) I generally try to avoid being too wordy, but sometimes you can get away with it if there are other compensations for the translation loss incurred :)

talking through his wounds

You have probably already thought of this literal translation. I have googled it and it is actually used, as it would appear, not as a translation from the Spanish expression, but in the lyrics of a song by a Jack White.

Or perhaps "talking through his pain" which is almost the same as what you had thought of.

that's the pain talking/you let the pain do the talking for you

It seems like a more pragmatic choice for this scenario would be "That's the x talking." So as to imply that the person will not take what is said very seriously. If you do an advanced search on google with the phrase, you'll see hits.

otherwise, you a closer match could be, "What you do is let the pain do the talking for you."
Example sentence:

"Oh, that's the pain talking. It's not really me?"

"Don't pay her any mind, I think that's the pain talking."

neutral Carol Gullidge : actually, I already suggested the first one!
