English term

follow-me power

English to French Art/Literary Government / Politics
A girl in Amazon asks some kind of sorcerer for "follow me powers". I can't fathom what I could be in English, saying nothing about French.

I knew that follow-me, follow-me was a secret, something that very few people knew about. That the powers came from some sort of potion you had to make.

Discussion

kantx (asker) May 16:
Not a kid's story The follow-me powers she's referring to are used by the chaman. Not by kids. So it's not a fairy tale affair. Magie de commandement is interesting (the faux-French gibberish aside), but I'm afraid it's a bit off the mark.
kantx (asker) May 16:
No it won't In my (long) experience, in that case, it won't.

“Grandfather,” I said, digging a hole in the earth with my machete, “can you give me follow-me, follow-me powers?”
We were in our garden downriver, planting bananas. Ana was walking and Mom was already pregnant again. She was hunched over the earth, on her knees, like an armadillo, little bits of soil spraying behind her. Dad was on the other side of the garden, harvesting plantains.
“My little granddaughter!” Donasco laughed. His voice had a mystical cadence, as if every word had the power to summon some invisible spirit. “Now what would a beautiful girl do with follow-me, follow-me powers?”
I didn’t know how to answer him. His eyes were all-seeing. I felt nervous. I took a young banana plant from the pile and placed it in the hole. I knew that follow-me, follow-me was a secret, something that very few people knew about. That the powers came from some sort of potion you had to make. Maybe I could use it to get my teeth to fall out, or to get Wengongi to answer me. Maybe I could even use it to get Stephanie to take me to the Land of Rachel.
kantx (asker) May 16:
It's not Well, it's definitely not a kid's story.
AllegroTrans May 16:
Thank you That certainly is context. Now we know it's a kids' story.

Context WILL help You don't seem to realise that we out here cannot see your text. Exactly what are you translating? Please post the actual text. Thank you.
kantx (asker) May 16:
Context will be no help… No need to call in CAPITAL letters.
Unfortunately, context provides little light if any.
That young girl belonging to an Amazonian ethnic group in Ecuatorian forest has some of her teeth extracted , believing Western colonist will pay for brand new teeth as a replacement.
She believed these "follow-me powers" could also allow her to fly to the US.

Obviously, I would need to find some ethnological research about these so-called powers, and didn't find any.
So back to square one.

AllegroTrans May 16:
HELLO kantx Are you going to provide CONTEXT?
Daryo May 14:
??? WHERE exactly is this "Amazon"???

The Amazon jungle, the "girl" being part of some tribe whose sorcerer knows how to make some "follow me, follow me" potions?

Also what would be link between some kind of magical potion or ritual and "context = Art/Literary - Government / Politics"???

Would this "girl" be some kind of wannabe politician asking a sorcerer for this potion??

Some more context?
@kantx

--------

Quelque chose du genre. Mais sans plus de contexte, je sèche !...

Merci
AllegroTrans May 14:
Woefully insufficient context Who is this "girl in Amazon"? Where is this "story" from? What exactly are you translating? A book? A film? A cartoon strip? What more can you tell us?
@kantx "Obéis, obéis"?
kantx (asker) May 14:
Exactly You're perfectly right. Hence the difficulty.
@kantx Ok. I seems like a chant to me. Hard to build a catching phrase with the appropiate syntax.
kantx (asker) May 14:
Yes Exactly as I wrote it.
@kantx And does it appear twice: "follow me, follow me"?
kantx (asker) May 14:
French expected Not related to any music. I've been there.

charisme

In the provided context, "follow-me power" may mean not only the power of attraction but also the ability to command or influence others to follow one's lead.
Note from asker:
Probably something around that sort of meaning, but I wonder if there is any documented French literature about it, and a matching sentence in French. Found nothing.

pouvoirs de persuasion or pouvoirs de commandement.

"Follow me powers" typically refer to a form of magical or supernatural ability that compels others to follow the individual who possesses these powers.

Examples in Literature and Media:
"Harry Potter" Series: Characters like Lord Voldemort use fear and magical influence to command followers.
"The Lord of the Rings": Characters like Saruman use their voice to exert control over others.
Comic Books: Characters such as Professor X from the X-Men use telepathy to influence others.

I think that the term "follow me powers" could be translated into French as "pouvoirs de persuasion" or "pouvoirs de commandement." These terms convey the idea of someone having the ability to compel others to follow them or influence them.

I believe these are the closest terms to the original.

@Kantx I hope this helps you with your thinking.

I was focusing on the first part :

A girl in Amazon asks some kind of sorcerer for "follow me powers". I can't fathom what I could be in English, saying nothing about French.

And not the sentence :
I knew that follow-me, follow-me was a secret, something that very few people knew about. That the powers came from some sort of potion you had to make.

Sorry, my mistake.
Note from asker:
This is too elaborate. In English, follow-me-follow-me has a colloquial or vernacular quality, it's conversational. Context is not a PhD.

Thanks! No ChatGPT for the translation suggestion, just Gemini helping me find relevant examples in literature and media. Like a fancy dictionary for suggestions! I'll definitely mention AI tools next time, just like giving credit. Just lack of time
neutral AllegroTrans : The basis of this forum is HUMAN suggestions and help to HUMANS, not ChatGPT input

Thanks! You're right ! Human to human is key here. AI helpers struggle with nuance (for now I may say). I used Gemini to find some examples. Like a fancy dictionary for suggestions! I'll definitely mention AI tools next time.
