My mistake: "bone screw", not "screw bone" Thanks, airmailrpl you are absolutely right!

When I added "bone" to "screw thread" for clarity, I did paste in the wrong position, and then copy-and-paste did me in for the rest of the text. I failed to revise it. :-(

The chosen expression vs. the phrase It's tough to select an expression leading to a good translation, especially as one is trying to understand a specialized text. In this case, although "rosca do parafuso para osso" would fit the fragment "screw bone thread", that doesn’t help with the given phrase, as "screw bone" is a qualifier for "thread". That is needed in English because "thread", by itself, can have meanings other than "rosca" (e.g. "linha" or "fio"). By contrast, in Portuguese, the repetition of "parafuso" is not needed and it sounds awkward. Once removed this redundancy, one needs to move the qualifier bone to the first occurrence of screw. That's how one arrives at

Os parafusos de osso devem ser aparafusados até o final das respectivas roscas.

The rearrangement stems from different requirements of the respective languages: a translation must first reproduce the actual meaning of the original, while conforming to proper usage in the target language. Now, in the case of literature, humour, critical essays, and the like, tone, style, and even specific constructions should also be considered whenever possible. agree coolbrowne : Concordo. Mas o texto deve ser remanejado: Os parafusos de osso devem ser aparafusados até o final das respectivas roscas. A construção original já não é das melhores, mas "traduzi-la" literalmente seria um desastre em português.
