German term
Brachfallen
German to English

Agriculture
"Die statistischen Daten zur Entwicklung von Siedlungs- und Verkehrsflächen in der BRD zeigen, dass deren Erweiterung immer zu Lasten der Freiflächen geht – und diese Entwicklung schreitet in NRW in den letzten Jahren weiter voran, insbesondere in den Ballungsrandbereichen. Trotz des Brachfallens vieler Flächen in der XYZ region ist auch in diesem Gebiet eine Zunahme des Flächenverbrauchs zu verzeichnen."
This is from a text about land usage in a certain region. I'm not sure what "Brachfallen" means exactly and would appreciate any explanations and/or suggestions as to how to translate it.
Many thanks
Ian

have been left to lie fallow
When ground is left to lie fallow, no crops are planted on it. When ground lies fallow it can to some extent recuperate so that in future healthier plants will grow thereon.

You can also say \"leave unused,\" when the reference is to other than agricultural land. Real property that is not exploited for any purpose is said to be left unuse.
