German term

Arbeitsplätze abbauen

German to English Bus/Financial Economics
I know what it means but am not satisfied I've ever found the best translation.

Dieser Wettbewerbsvorteil könnte beispielsweise den negativen Trend in der europäischen Teppichindustrie (in deutschen Teppichunternehmen wurden 2002 bis zu 20% der Arbeitsplätze abgebaut) aufhalten und dem Erhalt vieler akut gefährdeter Arbeitsplätze dienen.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Saskia and everyone else for your ideas. Job cutbacks is indeed a good solution but in my sentence: "2002 wurden bis zu 20% der Arbeitsplätze abgebaut" I found eliminated to be the easiest term to use."

eliminate

Have you considered something as simple as "eliminated"? Just a thought.

retrench jobs (or personnel)

This is the appropriate term used when referring to reduction / elimination of jobs. The abstract noun would be retrenchment of jobs or personnel. (In german carpet industries up to 20% of personnel were retrenched in 2002).

If you're looking for something other than to eliminate/to cut: this is yet another one which I've frequently seen in newspapers, notably the Financial Times/Economist.
