Essentially an inspired guess for the term given - I know exactly what is meant, but none of my technical dictionaries/encyclopedias have a diagramme specifically naming this part! It is nonetheless the point where the hinge pivots - either on a rod (furniture-type hinge) or on a post (heavy gate-type hinge).
