7.1 Die Bedenkzeit je Spieler beträgt zwei Stunden für 40 Züge, danach müssen die restlichen Züge bis zum Partieende (Blättchenfall) innerhalb von jeweils weiteren 30 Minuten pro Spieler ausgeführt werden. Daraus ergibt sich eine Höchstspieldauer von fünf Stunden pro Partie.

7.2 Die Uhren sind zu Partiebeginn einheitlich auf 4:00 Uhr zu stellen. Die Einhaltung der vorgeschriebenen Zügezahl wird durch den Schiedsrichter jeweils nach dem Überschreiten der Zeitmarken (Blättchenfall) um 6:00 Uhr kontrolliert.

6.1. 'Chess clock' means a clock with two time displays, connected to each other in such a way that only one of them can run at one time. 'Clock' in the Laws of Chess means one of the two time displays.
'Flag fall' means the expiry of the allotted time for a player.
6.2. When using a chess clock, each player must make a certain number or all moves in an allotted period of time; or may be allocated an additional amount of time after each move. All this must be specified in advance. The time saved by a player during one period is added to his time available for the next period, except in the 'time delay' mode.
In the time delay mode both players receive an alloted 'main thinking time'. They also receive a 'fixed extra time' for every move. The count down of the main time only commences after the fixed time has expired. Provided the player stops his clock before the expiry of the fixed time, the main thinking time does not change, irrespective of the proportion of the fixed time used.

Analog clocks (as pictured to the right) are equipped with a "flag" (a Dutch invention) that falls to indicate the exact moment the player's time has expired. Analog clocks used mechanical buttons. Pressing the button on your side physically stopped the movement of your clock and released the hold on your opponents. The drawbacks of the mechanical clocks included accuracy and matching of the two clocks, and matching of the indicators (flags) of time expiration.

1899 schlug H. D. B. Mejer, damaliger Sekretär der Niederländischen Schachvereinigung, vor, das Zifferblatt der Uhr mit einem sogenannten Fallblättchen (s. u.) auszustatten, um exakt bestimmen zu können, wann ein Spieler seine Bedenkzeit überschritt. Schachuhren mit Fallblättchen wurden allerdings erst rund zwanzig Jahre später die Regel.
