German term

identitätsstiftend

German to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. urban planning

A word that comes up often on the 'net but not in my dictionaries. Identity endowing or rather initiating?

TIA,
sylvie

creating a sense of identity

I read this as 'Identität' in a fairly broad sense and including an element of creating a feeling of personal and/or collective identity for the people who live/work there, not just in the design/layout of the area itself

you would need to restructure the to get this across: '...an aura/style/impact which is appropriate for Berlin and creates a sense of identity' or similar

prompted by Teresa's observations, an example of the broad sense:

I think this is much broader than simply the physical distinctiveness of the buildings

agree BrigitteHilgner : I like this very much - "generate an/a new identity" was my idea.

disagree Teresa Reinhardt : it's not an identity for Berliners (they don't need that) but for the buildings/areas; Cilian's answer is correct
