I think it is not sufficient to say that 'nikah siri' is merely an 'unofficial' or 'unregistered' marriage; it is instead a very specific kind of 'unofficial' or 'unregistered' marriage, i.e., one performed purportedly under Islamic law, but does not meet the criteria for a valid marriage, both because it is performed by someone not authorised to do so, is recognised neither by the community nor the authorities, and can have dire consequences for both the woman and any offspring.
Militant religious leader Abu Bakar Ba’asyir urged the government to ban nikah siri, because one of the requirements of a valid marriage, he said, was that the couple be acknowledged and recognised by the community as a married couple.
