"En plein air" refers specifically to the act of painting out of doors:

Although from the reference below one could think that "en plein air" is used for painting (whereas "al fresco" is normally used for dining), I think in this case the writer is just giving "synonyms" for "outdoors"). Therefore, "al aire libre" would be the right translation, as Miguel said.
