English to French: Abbotsford House - Scotland General field: Marketing Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Source text - English Abbotsford House, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott. The house contains an impressive collection of historic relics, weapons and armour, including Rob Roy’s gun, dirk and sword, and an extensive library containing over 9,000 rare volumes. It sits amid formal gardens and a wider landscape that Scott designed and planted.
English to French: Orkney General field: Marketing Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Source text - English Orkney is a captivating and fiercely independent archipelago made up of seventy or so mostly low-lying islands, with a population of less than twenty thousand. The locals tend to refer to themselves first as Orcadians, regarding Scotland as a separate entity, and proudly flying their own flag. For an Orcadian, the Mainland invariably means the largest island in Orkney rather than the rest of Scotland, and throughout their distinctive history they’ve been linked to lands much further afield, principally Scandinavia.
Orkney has two chief settlements: Stromness, an attractive old fishing town on the far southwestern shore, and the capital, Kirkwall, which stands at the dividing point between East and West Mainland. The Mainland is relatively heavily populated, and farmed throughout, and is joined by causeways to a string of southern islands, the largest of which is South Ronaldsay. The island of Hoy, the second largest of the archipelago, south of Mainland, presents a superbly dramatic landscape, with some of the highest sea cliffs in the country. Hoy, however, is atypical: Orkney’s smaller, much quieter northern islands are low-lying, elemental but fertile outcrops of rock and sands, scattered across the ocean.
For visitors, the best time to come is in spring and summer when the days are long, the sandy beaches dazzling, the cliffs packed with seabirds and the meadows thick with wild flowers. In autumn and winter, the islands are often battered by gale force winds and daylight is scarce, but the temperature stays remarkably mild thanks to the ameliorating effect of the Gulf Stream. Wind is, of course, a factor, throughout the year, though its almost constant presence does mean the midges are less of a problem, except on Hoy.
Since the mid-1970s the large oil terminal on the island of Flotta, the establishment of the Orkney Islands Council (OIC), combined with EU development grants, have brought surprise windfalls, helping to stem the exodus of young people. Meanwhile, many disenchanted southerners have become “ferryloupers” (incomers) moving to Orkney in search of peace and the apparent simplicity of island life.
